Half of the fun in owning smart lights is playing with them, and in that respect Philips has been king from day one. The sheer volume of third party apps that allow you to have lights thump with the music, glow as though the Sun is rising to wake you, or even change colors in sync with Sharknado 2 make these lights a ton of fun. Eventually, however, you’ll need them for a semi-serious fare, and while a creative eye is all it takes to make your space look great, it doesn’t hurt to have a little help. Philips is testing a new app, Hue Ambiance, that aims at being that helping hand.

Hue Ambiance

Hue Ambiance is a web app that syncs to your existing Hue bridge and lets you choose from a series of pre-made scenes. Like the core Hue app, these scenes are noted by a large photo, so you have a rough idea of what you’re getting yourself into, but it’s not totally clear until you press the button. Right now, the top Hue scenes are holiday themed, and after you’ve clicked on one and let it change your lights, you’re invited to vote on the scene. A simple thumbs up or thumbs down helps the Hue app decide what to offer you next, and the more you use it, the better the app will be at offering you scenes that you’ll like.

The web app is fairly limited for the moment, only allowing access to three bulbs at a time and not offering a ton of customization after the preset is made. However, the whole point of the app is to create a setup where Philips is offering you scenes based on your choices and your environment in order to better set the surrounding mood. You can allow things like weather and time of day to affect the suggestions, and everyone who tries the app is heavily encouraged to offer feedback to Philips. You can check out the app here if you have a Hue bridge in place, and immediately start filling your room with color.
